What were your parents doing at your age?
When people ask, “What were your parents doing at your age?” it often makes us reflect on how different generations grow up. Many of our parents, at our current age, were already carrying serious responsibilities. Some were in universities or learning a trade, working very hard to secure a stable future. Others were already employed, earning salaries, and supporting their younger siblings or even their own parents.
In many African homes, especially in countries like Nigeria, young adults in the past matured quickly because life demanded it. Some of our parents were already married or preparing for marriage. They focused more on survival, building homes, and establishing strong family values. Opportunities like social media, smartphones, and digital careers were not available to them.
Unlike today, distractions were fewer, but challenges were greater. They faced economic struggles, limited technology, and fewer educational resources. Yet, they developed resilience, discipline, and patience.
Comparing their lives to ours should not discourage us. Instead, it should inspire us to appreciate their sacrifices while making the most of our own opportunities and building a better future for ourselves.
